Earned Coverage Index
Which startups get press, week by week
Each week we monitor startup coverage in 20 top publications, from TechCrunch and Axios to Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal, and track what is making it: the topics, the sectors, the kinds of stories and the founders. This is what actually got covered.

How the index works
Outlets. TechCrunch, Inc., Fast Company, Forbes, Fortune, Business Insider, Axios, The Information, Bloomberg, The Wall Street Journal, Reuters, CNBC, VentureBeat, Wired, The Verge, Entrepreneur, GeekWire, Crunchbase News, PitchBook News and Sifted.
What counts. A story about a private, founder-led company or its founders, including acquisitions and IPOs of startups. Stories about big public companies, markets or policy are left out unless a startup is the subject.
How we code it. We read each story's headline, summary and byline from the outlets' public feeds and code it with AI, then review the categories every week. Shares are weighted: a story where the startup is the main subject counts 1, one of several 0.5, a passing mention 0.25, and an exclusive 1.5. Founder signals are recorded only when the story states them; we never infer gender, age or background from a name.
Use it. Cite the Earned Coverage Index with a link to this page. We publish counts and our own coding, never the outlets' articles; follow the links to read them.
