Getting started

What is Earned?

A press desk for founders. Earned matches you with reporters, podcast hosts and awards that fit your company, drafts the pitch for each one from your profile and their recent stories, and tracks every pitch through to coverage. You send pitches from your own email, so reporters hear from you directly.

How is this different from hiring a publicist?

A publicist pitches on your behalf, usually for a monthly retainer. Earned gives you the contacts, the drafts and the plan to do it yourself, for a fraction of the cost. Reporters often prefer hearing from the founder.

Does Earned send pitches for me?

No. You send pitches from your own email. The one exception is the Earned desk: when you choose Put me forward on a media opportunity, the Earned team pitches you as a source from Earned's account.

Is coverage guaranteed?

No. Reporters decide what runs. Earned improves your odds with the right reporters, a pitch built for each one, and a steady rhythm. As a rule of thumb, about one in eight good pitches gets a reply.

Where do I start?

Finish your profile (two minutes), run Journalist Match to see your 10 best-fit reporters, add one to Outreach, draft your pitch in Pitch Studio, and send it. The Today tab walks you through it.

Plans and the trial

What do the plans cost?

Solo is $149 a quarter or $499 a year with 300 credits a month. Growth is $299 a quarter or $999 a year with 1,000 credits a month and a press report each quarter. Launch is $699 a quarter or $2,499 a year with 3,000 credits a month, an Editors' Council review and an Earned Wire release each quarter, and invitations to the editor dinners. Billing is quarterly or annual.

How do credits work?

Every plan includes a monthly allowance of credits. Reporters, drafts and put-forwards each use credits. Top up anytime, or move up a plan and pay only the difference. Unlocking a reporter uses 10 credits, an AI draft or Story Note 1, an award or speaking draft 15, a put-forward request 20 (up to 5 a month on Solo, 10 on Growth and 25 on Launch, since our team pitches each one by hand) and an Interview Prep session 5. Solo includes 300 a month, Growth 1,000 and Launch 3,000. Credits reset each month on the day your plan started. Quarterly plans do not roll credits over; annual plans roll over up to one month. Packs (100 credits for $25, 250 for $49) are used after your plan credits and last until the end of the quarter. Your meter is on Today and in Account, and every button shows its cost.

How does the free trial work?

Every plan starts with 3 days free. A card is required at sign-up. The trial includes 60 credits (up to 6 reporters) and 1 put-forward request, enough to send your first pitches. Cancel in Billing before day 4 and you pay nothing; otherwise your full plan starts on day 4.

Can I start my full plan before the trial ends?

Yes. Choose Unlock now on the Today tab or in Account. The trial ends, your card is charged that day, and your full plan starts right away.

How do I upgrade, switch to annual or cancel?

Upgrade or switch to annual in one click from Account; you pay only the difference for the rest of your current period. To update your card, download invoices or cancel, open Manage billing in Account.

Is there anything free?

Yes. The free reporter match shows your top three reporters with no card and the PR launch countdown builds a dated press plan.

Reporters and the journalist database

Who is in the directory?

Reporters, editors, podcast hosts and producers who cover startups, technology, business and the sectors founders work in, each vetted by hand and kept up to date. It includes reporters at publications such as The New York Times.

Can I see the whole journalist database?

Yes. Members can browse the full directory in the Journalists tab: search, filter by beat, outlet type and role, and sort. Journalist Match ranks the best fits for you, but you can always look beyond them.

When do I get a reporter's email?

When you add the reporter to Outreach. Unlocking a reporter uses 10 credits from your monthly allowance. Reporters you add to Outreach by hand are free.

What are press requests and the Earned desk?

Reporters looking for sources post requests every day. The Earned desk collects them, ranks the open ones for your company and picks your top three each morning. Choose Put me forward and the Earned team pitches you as a source. You can also forward media request emails you receive to your private Earned address.

Tools

What is What ChatGPT Says?

One button runs a report on how AI describes your company. Earned asks ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Grok the questions buyers, investors and reporters ask, each with live web search, then shows whether you come up, whether the facts are right, which sites the answers lean on, and what to fix. You get a score for each assistant and a report you can save as a PDF. A new report runs every Monday.

Can Earned control what ChatGPT says about my company?

No one can. AI answers are built from what credible sites say. Earned shows you which sites matter and drafts the pages and profiles AI reads, and coverage in the right places changes answers over time.

What is Earned Wire?

A managed press release for members. You draft the release in Earned, our desk checks it, and on Pro a former editor line-edits it. We put it out through our national newswire partner under your company name, then pitch it to your 10 matched reporters. Standard is $299 for Growth and Launch members ($399 list), Pro $699, National $1,795; Launch includes one Standard release each quarter. No release guarantees coverage. How Earned Wire works.

What is an Editors' Council review?

Three former editors from publications including The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times mark up as many as three of your pitch drafts, then one of them holds a 30-minute strategy call with you. It is $350 on any plan, and Launch includes one each quarter.

What are the member webinars?

Once a month, former editors walk members through how press works: how reporters choose stories, how lists get picked, how to announce a round. They are for members only and included in every plan. RSVP from the Editors tab in the app; the Zoom link is emailed before each webinar, and replays stay in your account.
